Blooming Onions

These Blooming Onions are a crispy, golden appetizer made from a whole sweet onion cut to resemble a flower, battered, and deep-fried to perfection. Served with a creamy dipping sauce, it’s the ultimate party pleaser.

Ingredients

  • 1 large sweet onion (Vidalia or Walla Walla)
  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 2 tsp horseradish
  • ¼ tsp paprika
  • ¼ tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Cut the Onion: Slice ½ inch off the top, leave root intact. Cut into 12–16 wedges without cutting through the root. Soak in ice water for 30 minutes.
  2. Prepare Batters: Mix dry ingredients in one bowl; whisk milk and egg in another.
  3. Batter the Onion: Shake water off the onion, coat in dry mix, dip in wet mix, then dredge again in dry.
  4. Fry: Heat oil to 375°F (190°C). Fry onion root-side up for 6–8 minutes until golden.
  5. Drain and Serve: Let drain on paper towels and serve warm with dipping sauce.
